Another gloomy grey day in London.
My friend Chris and I decided to go down to St. Paul’s Cathedral and watch the Lord Mayor’s Show.
Here is a little blurb from Wikipedia:
“The Lord Mayor’s Show is one of the longest established and best known annual events in London which dates back to 1535. The Lord Mayor in question is that of the City of London, the historic centre of London that is now the metropolis’s financial district, informally known as the Square Mile. A new Lord Mayor is appointed every year and the public parade that is made of his inauguration reflects the fact that this was once one of the most prominent offices in England. The ancient position of Lord Mayor of London has a role in the Square Mile, whilst the Mayor of London (which has existed only since 2000) is a different individual entirely, namely the elected head of the Greater London Authority.
The event is a street parade which in its modern form is a fairly light-hearted combination of traditional British pageantry and elements of carnival. On the day after being sworn in, the Lord Mayor and several others participate in a procession from the City of London to the Royal Courts of Justice in the City of Westminster, where the Lord Mayor swears his allegiance to the Crown.”
Now, being the slightly lazy person I am, especially on a day off, we were a little late… A lot late. Which sounds worse than it is. We missed the massive crowds of people that saw the parade on the first part of its circuitous route. Luckily, we caught most of the rest a half block away in front of the Millennium Bridge.
Now, my picture taking wasn’t all too good on this day. Lots of blurry shots at first. So, a lot of the pictures involving many people in uniforms with big guns have been removed.
So, ultimately a parade is a parade, and people walk and do things. Pretty cool. The real highlight for me was all the uniforms, the police officer standing in front of me, and the horseguards that we ran into afterwards while walking away. Got a quick picture in front of them.
After that it was a walk through the City of London, which is the oldest part. We actually went to the London Museum. It was so jam packed full of people and children that we really did a rush tour. I took no photographs, because I didn’t think I could get any nice ones with that many people crammed into such a poorly organized space. Means I need to go back is all.
Home time! Cheers
